The tale of FC Utrecht football team commences in the year 1970, over in Holland. Their notorious contests occur primarily at their home ground, the grand Stadion Galgenwaard. While it isn’t exactly Parkhead, it emanates its unique Dutch charm.
Their squad of spry lads, numbering 20 in all, is said to be worth approximately £67m in the open market, rounding off the estimation by Transfermarkt. 'Tis an impressive figure no doubt given the club's relatively young existence.
Though it is fair to say the average age of their players is a mature 27, which suggests they prefer their steel tempered and tested rather than still in the forge. Experience does often trump youthful exuberance, as the seasoned fans of this very sport will affirm.
As far their seasonal ventures go, Utrecht dabbles in several competitions. A rather admirable feat, one that could turn on the heat in their domestic league, the Eredivisie, where they currently maintain a respectable 7th position. Then there's the KNVB Beker, the domestic cup as we would call it, where they've had a decent run right to the round of 16. A notable mention indeed.
However, the European theatre hasn't welcomed them with open arms. Seeing the club only reach the Play-Offs stage during the Europa League Qualifiers, and subsequently sputtering out in the League Phase. Disappointing, but one cannot expect to always dance at the big stage with such fierce competition about. Perhaps next season, brighter days will turn up for our Dutch fellows. Only time will tell.
