Delightfully, we're here to discuss the colourful adventures of Vaclav Cerny, a 27-year-old football forward from the Czech Republic who tends to do his little dance on the right wing for the Rangers. Now, he might not be the tallest lad on the pitch with a height of only 5ft 10in (1.78m), and at 10st 9lb (68kg), he's about as heavy as a light sack of haggis, but he's ours to enjoy in the number 18 jersey. The chap has even had a go with the Czech Republic national team, bless him.
According to Transfermarkt, he's worth around £7m and is stuck with Rangers till June 2025. How fortunate.
Let’s take a little jaunt through his professional journey. He set off from 1. FK Příbram in the Czech Republic to Ajax in Netherlands in January 2014 for a whopping £650k. He made quite a few appearances with Ajax, but the performances sputtered like an old Trabant. After what must have felt like an eternity for Ajax, Cerny was handed off to FC Utrecht in 2019 for a crisp £680k.
He was then loaned to FC Twente in 2020, making more appearances and scoring a handful of goals. Then in July 2021, FC Twente decided to take the plunge and purchase him from FC Utrecht for a splurge of £860k.
In an odd twist of fate, he was sold to Wolfsburg in Germany in 2023 for a surprising £7.7m. Following a year at Wolfsburg, Rangers deemed it shrewd to bring him on loan in 2024 and here we stand. His current attire includes 26 appearances and 11 goals for the Rangers during 2024-2025. He's also had his fingers in the pie of the League Cup, Scottish Cup, Euro 2024, Euro Qualifiers, Champions League Qualifiers, Nations League and the Europa League.
One thing's clear – entertaining he is, with an interesting odyssey. A bit more commitment, and less of the moving about perhaps, could make him a name worth remembering.
