Beginnings of Armstrong's career can be traced back to July 2015, when he switched allegiances from Birmingham City to Cowdenbeath in Scotland. Despite making only six first team appearances during the 2015-2016 inaugural season for Cowdenbeath, Armstrong embarked on a journey of growth and development.
In July 2016, he elected to take his talents to Blyth Spartans in England's National League North. A year later, he moved up the ranks to Championship side Middlesbrough, although the amount of the transfer remains undisclosed till date. His stint with the Middlesbrough squad was punctuated by loan spells; first, Gateshead in July 2018 and subsequently to Accrington Stanley in the succeeding January.
The summer window of 2019 presented a new challenge for Armstrong in the form of Salford City in League Two. He found himself on the move again in December 2020, this time on loan to National League side Hartlepool United. July 2021 saw another shift, this time to Harrogate Town, also in the League Two, for an undisclosed fee.
Armstrong turned up for Harrogate Town during the 2022-2023 season where he made thirty-six first team appearances and netted 12 league goals. January 2024 marked another shift in Armstrong's career when he moved to Carlisle United, again for an undisclosed fee. After only a year with Carlisle, he was loaned out to Motherwell, his current club, in January 2025. He has made a decent start to his tenure with the Scottish side, appearing six times and finding the back of the net twice in league matches during the ongoing 2024-2025 season.
