Irish defender Liam Scales, born 8 August 1998 and currently aged 27, primarily operates as a centre-back for Celtic Football Club. Standing tall at 6ft 2in (1.88m) and weighing in at 13st 5lb (85kg), Scales is a commanding presence on the pitch. The defender, who dons the number 5 jersey for Celtic, has also had the honour of representing his home country at the Republic of Ireland national team.
As per Transfermarkt, Scales' present market value hovers around £4m. The journey that led him to this valuation began in earnest in 2017 when he joined UCD in the First Division of the Republic of Ireland for an undisclosed fee. During his debut season in 2019, Scales racked up 30 first-team appearances and scored one goal in league matches.
January 2020 saw Scales transition from UCD to Shamrock Rovers, a club operating in the Premier Division of the Republic of Ireland. In his first season at Rovers, Scales made 16 first team appearances, a number that would rise to 23 in 2021, albeit accompanied by two goals.
By August 2021, Scales' talents had garnered the attention of Scottish Premiership club Celtic, with a transfer for an undisclosed fee finally securing his services. His inaugural season in Scotland saw him make five first team appearances and mark a goal to his name. His time at Celtic Park was marked by a loan to Aberdeen in the 2022/2023 season where he made 31 first team appearances and scored one goal in league matches.
On returning to Celtic in June 2023 from his loan stint, Scales further entrenched himself as a mainstay, particularly as evidenced by his 2023 - 2024 and 2024 - 2025 seasons; netting a goal in 34 appearances in the former and two goals in 26 appearances in the latter. In the current 2025 - 2026 season, Scales has already made 28 first team appearances.
Aside from his robust involvement in league games, Scales proved instrumental for Celtic in multiple tournaments, including the League Cup (2025 - 2026), Scottish Cup (2025 - 2026), Champions League Qualifiers (2025 - 2026) and Europa League (2025 - 2026). His World Cup Qualification contributions include two starts and one substitute appearance for the Republic of Ireland (2024 - 2026). From his first start in the League Cup to his instants of brilliance in the Europa League, Scales' contributions to Celtic are as numerous as they are invaluable.
