Liam Scales, born on the 8th of August 1998, is a promising central defender hailing from the Republic of Ireland. Currently standing at an impressive 6ft 2in (1.88m) and weighing 13st 5lb (85kg), Scales proudly dons the number 5 jersey for none other than Celtic Football Club. Complete with international experience, Scales has represented the Republic of Ireland national team, showcasing his talent on a global stage.
A promising talent indeed, Scales holds a market value of around £3.5m, as per Transfermarkt. With his contract slated to run until the 31st of May 2028, he remains a valuable asset to Celtic over the next three years.
Scales' professional journey began in the Republic of Ireland. In January 2017, he joined UCD in the First Division. Here, Scales showcased his ability, amassing 30 first team appearances and scoring one goal in his debut 2019 season.
In January 2020, Scales bid farewell to UCD to join Shamrock Rovers in the Irish Premier Division. His penchant for defence was on full display during the two seasons he spent with Shamrock Rovers, making a total of 39 appearances and scoring two goals in league matches.
Celtic recognised his talent, and Scales transferred to the Scottish Premiership giants in August 2021. His start might've been somewhat reserved, with only five first team appearances and one goal in his first season (2021 - 2022). However, Scales' stint with Celtic has been characterised by growth, culminating in 21 appearances and two goals in the current season (2024 - 2025).
Scales' time at Celtic was briefly interrupted for the 2022 - 2023 season, when he was loaned to fellow Scottish Premiership team, Aberdeen. Over the course of the season, Scales appeared 31 times and scored once. Once the loan period ended in June 2023, Scales returned to Celtic and continued to impress with increasing game time and consistent goal scoring.
His efforts have not been limited to domestic football. Scales has contributed significantly to Celtic's continental campaigns, and has been involved in the Euro Qualifiers (2022 - 2024) for the Republic of Ireland and the Nations League (2024 - 2025), where he netted one goal in four starts. Add to that his performances in the Champions League, both in the 2023 - 2024 and 2024 - 2025 campaigns, and it is no surprise that Liam Scales continues to make a name for himself both at home and abroad.
