Kevin Kampl, born on 9 October 1990 (age 35), is a Slovenian midfielder who came through Bayer Leverkusen’s system before finding his footing away from the first-team queue. Loan spells at Greuther Fürth and VfL Osnabrück gave him senior football early, before a further step at VfR Aalen pushed him on again.
Red Bull Salzburg was where he became more visible. His best league season came in 2013-14, when he scored nine goals in 33 appearances, a useful return for a player whose later career would settle into deeper midfield work.
Borussia Dortmund followed in 2015, but the spell was brief. A return to Bayer Leverkusen came later that year, and in 2017 he moved on to RB Leipzig, where he has been used primarily as a central defensive midfielder. His current market value is around £3m, according to Transfermarkt.
Kampl’s career has been built across Germany and Austria, from early loans to established Bundesliga football. He is not a Celtic figure, but he has had the sort of steady, well-travelled career that comes from making those first senior spells count.
