John McGinn, born on 18 October 1994 (age 31), is a Scotland midfielder whose senior career is now shaped far more by Aston Villa than by any earlier chapter. Celtic were strongly linked with him before his move south in 2018, a familiar enough detail, but Villa is where the story properly settled.
Primarily a central midfielder, McGinn quickly became an important figure at Villa. His first league season there, 2018-2019, remains his most productive domestically, with six goals in 40 appearances. Across eight seasons he has made 272 league appearances for the club, scoring 28 goals.
He remains part of the Villa side in 2025-2026 rather than drifting into the background. Wearing number seven, he has made 29 league appearances and scored five goals, with 43 appearances and 10 goals in all competitions, including a productive Europa League campaign. He has also featured six times for Scotland in European World Cup qualifying this season.
His current market value is around £13m, according to Transfermarkt. McGinn’s career has become a long Aston Villa spell with a continuing Scotland role attached: durable, useful, and still relevant at a good level.
