Joe Newell, born on 15 March 1993 (age 33), is an English central midfielder best known in Scotland for his long spell with Hibernian. He wears the No 11 shirt and has generally operated as a steady first-team midfield option rather than a headline act.
His most productive league season came at Rotherham United in 2015-16, when he scored five goals in 35 appearances. That remains the clearest attacking return of his career, though his game has more often been built around possession, positioning and keeping the midfield functioning.
At Hibernian in 2025-26, Newell has made 14 league appearances and scored one league goal, as well as one Scottish Cup appearance. Across all competitions for Hibs that season, he has played 15 times and scored once.
Newellโs career has been that of an established midfielder: useful, experienced and familiar in Scottish Premiership company, without needing to be dressed up as anything more dramatic.
