Joe Newell, a bona fide compatriot of the beautiful game, was born in England on 15th March 1993, making him, as of this scribbling 31 years of age. With a height clocking in at around 5 feet 10 inches (approximately 1.8m for our metric adherents), and tipping the scales at an approximate 11 stone 2 pounds (or around 71kg), Newell carves an athletic figure on the pitch. He plies his trade as a central midfielder for Scotland's Hibernian Football Club and you'll find him donning the number 11 jersey on the field.
In the chilly month of January 2011, Newell made tracks from his homeland and spiralled his way into Peterborough United, embarking on his journey in England's League One. Throughout his inaugural season, he made a meagre two appearances, a number which marginally escalated to 14 appearances and a solitary goal in the following season. By the 2012-2013 season, Newell seemed to be finding his footing, gracing the pitch in 30 league matches. However, the successive season saw him fading slightly into the outfield, only making 11 appearances. But the lad remained undeterred, coming back robustly in the 2014-2015 season with an impressive 39 appearances and a brace of goals.
In the heated throes of August 2015, Newell departed Peterborough United and set sail for Rotherham United, another reputable outfit in England's League One. The terms of the transfer remain undisclosed to this day. Newell persevered in his new roost, marking an admirable 35 appearances and scoring five goals in his maiden season at Rotherham. The trend continued, albeit with minor fluctuations, and by the end of the 2017-2018 season, Newell had clocked up another 24 appearances and netted three goals. His final year at Rotherham, the 2018-2019 season, saw the midfielder feature in 31 league matches.
The summer of July 2019 ushered in a significant shift for Newell when he crossed over the English border to join the ranks of Hibernian in Scotland's Premiership. His contributions over the seasons have varied, with the midfielder making 19 appearances in his first season, escalating to the peak of 37 in the 2023-2024 season, a season in which he also scored twice. As for the current season of 2024-2025, Newell has already made 16 appearances and netted twice. He's also been a mainstay in the League Cup, impressing with four starts for Hibernian.
While he never had the honour of donning the Celtic green and white, Newell's commitment to his craft and his performance on the pitch speaks volumes about his dedication to the sport, and he remains a central figure for Hibernian.
