Dwight Gayle, born on 17 October 1989, is an English-born forward best known for his skills as a key striker. He currently plays for Hibernian, where he wears the number 34 jersey and wows spectators with his adeptness on the field. Despite standing at 5ft 8in (1.74m) and weighing in at 12st 3lb (78kg), his stature does not curtail his performance.
As Transfermarkt mentions, his current market value hovers around the £100k mark. His contract with Hibernian has a mere 3 months remaining, set to expire on 31 May 2025.
Gayle’s football journey began in July 2012 with Dagenham & Redbridge in the National League in England, where in his debut season alone, he made 18 first team appearances and crammed seven goals to his credit. By November of the same year, he had moved to Peterborough United in the League One, still on English soil. His goal scoring did not cease to impress, as he managed 13 goals in 29 first team appearances, which persuaded Peterborough to sign him officially for a reported sum of around £750k in January 2013.
Emerging as a rising star in the League One, Gayle was signed by Crystal Palace in the Premier League in July 2013 for an approximate fee of £6m. He had three seasons with them (from 2013-2016), during which time he made a total of 64 appearances and scored 15 goals.
In July 2016, Gayle moved again, this time to Newcastle United in the Premier League. His transfer fee was rumoured to be in the ballpark of £10m. During his tenure at Newcastle (2016 - 2022), Gayle was loaned to West Bromwich Albion where he made 39 appearances and scored 23 goals in the 2018/2019 season. After the completion of his loan, he returned to Newcastle, where he continued to feature regularly until his move to Stoke City in July 2022.
While his goal scoring prowess declined somewhat at Stoke City — 3 goals in 35 appearances — Gayle persevered. A brief stint at Derby County led him north of the border to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership in September 2024.
During the current 2024 - 2025 season at Hibernian, Gayle has made 19 first team appearances and added four goals to his tally. His talents were also utilised in the Scottish Cup 2024 - 2025, where he made his mark, albeit as a substitute. Gayle's diverse football career span demonstrates not only his love for the sport but his dedication and perseverance in moving from club to club in the quest to hone his skills even further.
